Ordering breakfast at a diner

Check the combinations, sides and service times.

Check when breakfast is served

Read the current menu and check breakfast service hours at the location you plan to visit. A diner label does not promise an all-day breakfast menu. Ask about a particular dish before making a special trip for it.

Read the whole combination

Check what comes with the plate and which choices you need to make. Toast, potatoes, fruit or other sides may be included, optional or charged separately. Ask staff to explain the combination if the menu layout is unclear.

State your preferences clearly

Give the server the preparation and side choices requested by the menu. Explain ingredient restrictions before ordering and ask what the kitchen can accommodate. Confirm the cost of additions or substitutions rather than assuming they are part of the base plate.

Fit the visit to your plans

If you have limited time, ask about the service process and choose an order that fits it. Check how payment works before you need to leave. For a group, agree on individual versus shared orders so the final bill is easier to follow.
